Let me start out by saying that it has been a huge honor to serve as Muskingum County Sheriff for the last 11 ½ years. I want to thank all of our employees for the amazing job they do protecting our community on a daily basis and their families for sharing their loved ones with us and supporting them in what they do. I also want to thank the citizens of Muskingum County for all of the support that you give to us. We could not do this job without it.
The office of Sheriff is very unique, as it is the only elected law enforcement official in the State of Ohio. The Sheriff is elected every 4 years allowing the Sheriff, their record and the way in which they operate their office to be accountable to the citizens and the voters of the county. It is the only remaining law enforcement position in the United States which is filled through the electoral process.
That’s why now is a very exciting time. My current term ends January 3rd, 2021 and I am up for re-election for a new term beginning January 4th, 2021. Having already served almost 3 terms, I am looking forward to continuing my service over the next 4 years. Any election process has its challenges, however as I start my campaign I will look forward to meeting with our citizens, speaking about the positive things my office has done and listening to their concerns. From the very beginning I have continued to attend events, fundraisers and other various outings showing my support for our community. I hope to see most of you in the upcoming months.
This campaign will be different from the first one that I ran. In today’s times, the social media platforms are very active and serve as the main line of communication for many. I hope that if our citizens have questions that they feel free to contact me directly. There is a lot of false information and deceitful statements that are put on social media. Please check the information you read and hear about to make sure you are getting the truth.
I am very proud of what we have accomplished. From the minute our administration took over, part of our focus has always been to provide the best equipment to our employees. We started a car program to keep our deputies in the best and safest vehicles to better serve our public. We helped orchestrate the move into our current facility, saving the county money and for the first time ever providing free parking for several of our employees. We were also able to build a new state of the art Communications Center as well as continuing to provide new weapons, new vests and updating other equipment.
Thinking about the future, I want to continue to provide the best possible equipment for our employees. We have been in discussions with the commissioners about building a new jail. There is a huge need for this and we want to continue those discussions. Drug enforcement has always been and will continue to be one of our top priorities to enforce. Our combined drug unit with the Zanesville Police Department as well as being a member of the Central Ohio Drug Task Force has been very successful. We want to continue these efforts.
Being Sheriff comes with a lot of responsibility. It is a position that demands accountability, professionalism, compassion, integrity and the ability to work with others. I have kept these traits in the front of my mind while serving in this position. It is a great honor to serve as Sheriff. I will continue to strive to make Muskingum County the safest place to live, work and raise a family.
